Wright was the manager of Kinchega, a sheep and cattle station on the west bank of the Darling. He offered to lead the party from Menindie to Torowoto, and as an experienced bushman with local knowledge, his offer was readily accepted by Burke.
Wright was then given the job of returning to Menindie, where Burke had left most of his men, animals and supplies, and bringing them up to reinforce the camp at Cooper's Creek. However, he wasted nearly four months before setting out, and then encountered such grave difficulties that he never reached his destination. He was still struggling towards Cooper's Creek when he was met by Brahe, returning after having abandoned the camp.
Wright received perhaps the severest criticism of any individual in the official inquiry into the Expedition.
