The art of Eric Thake embodied the paradox of 'travelling without moving'. He was constantly saying goodbye to the Melbourne of his youth - without actually leaving it. Instead, Melbourne left him, as the buildings and spaces that had shaped his world disappeared - decade by decade - under the wrecker's ball.
Thake was commissioned to decorate the board room in 1959.
The last days of the Eastern Market is documented by Eric Thake in this album he created in 1965.
Thake maps his childhood memories from the 1920s and 1930s of the Melbourne suburban neighbourhood where he lived as a child. |
